The drone industry is growing rapidly. A drone also known as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is essentially a flying Robot. Drones have been associated with military uses, weather monitoring and surveillance, but are becoming more popular among civilians too

DroneDeploy, which is a cloud-based drone software system, recently published a report providing information regarding the use of drone technology.

The DroneDeploy report said the acres mapped by users have doubled in the last four months and suggested that the drone industry appears to be poised for rapid growth.

The company automatically creates a high-resolution 3D map with survey-level accuracy. Users can then share it, or store in the cloud.

In one year users of DroneDeploy users mapped one million acres, four months later the number doubled to 2 million mapped acres.

The company has said users are leveraging drones to create very large maps, which in turn leads to drone manufactures and camera manufacturers vying for the emerging commercial drone market.

Mapping techniques too have improved, more users are adopting 3D mapping, also surprising is that many users now own more than one drone.

While drone penetration is greatest in North America and Europe, where it is used primarily for surveying, in South America it is used to support agriculture. Drone use is noted in Africa too, where it was mainly used for surveying purposes.

While it remains to be seen what new regulations would govern the commercial use of drones, we can anticipate that the drone industry will see growth.
